George Clooney wrote a political poem for our country

On Friday night, President Trump put his favorite word to good use — fired.

At a rally in Alabama, Trump criticized some players in the National Football League for kneeling during the national anthem. Then he suggested that the team owners do something about the kneeling: “Wouldn’t you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say, ‘get that son of a bitch off the field now. Out. Out. He’s fired!'”

Many teams took this as an opportunity to protest his comments. They protested by linking arms and kneeling during the singing of the national anthem.

Americans across the nation are showing support for the protesters. Many high-profile people, including actor and activist George Clooney, saw the controversy as yet another example of division in the country. This morning, Clooney wrote a political poem, “A Prayer for Our Country,” and sent it off to the Daily Beast.

I pray for my country.

I pray that we can find more that unites us than divides us.

I pray that our nation’s leaders want to do the same.

I pray that young children like Tamir Rice can feel safe in their own neighborhood.

I pray for all of our children.

I pray for our police and our first responders.

I pray for our men and women of the armed services.

I pray that dissent will always be protected in this great country.

I pray for a more perfect union.

And when I pray, I kneel.

Clooney’s powerful close to his poem shows his support for kneeling NFL players and his stance against Trump. The actor has never really shied away from his feelings about Trump. In August, he had no problem criticizing the president to the Associated Press: “It becomes increasingly clear how in over his head and incapable this man is of being president of the United States.”
