George Clooney is keeping with tradition when it comes to celebrating his wedding anniversary with Amal Clooney.

The two celebrated nine years of marriage on Wednesday and Clooney, 62, shared what he got for his lawyer wife — who joked she was less than impressed with his choice.

“What is the gift? What is it you found out? It was clay,” George told Extra while on the red carpet for the Clooney Foundation for Justice’s Albie Awards on Thursday.

“It wasn’t an exciting one,” Amal, 45, said after her husband revealed he’d gotten her something traditional for their ninth anniversary, which is typically celebrated with a willow or pottery gift.

“Pottery for a ninth anniversary. So, I gave her a pot,” George said.

Amal, again, shared with a laugh that it wasn’t the best present she’s ever received as she called the gift “something not very exciting.”

As George explained what he got for her, Amal also joked that the two “have to wait another, like, 16 years” before the traditional anniversary gift is anything particularly impressive.

George wed Amal in 2014 in an intimate ceremony in Venice, Italy. Walter Veltroni, a close friend of the couple and the former mayor of Rome, officiated.

Despite how private it was, the wedding was one of the buzziest events of the year, with star-studded guests like Matt Damon, Anna Wintour, Bono, John Krasinski and Emily Blunt, Cindy Crawford and Rande Gerber in attendance as they said “I do.”

There were three days of parties in Italy prior to the nuptials and Amal’s mother, Baria, told PEOPLE the intimate ceremony was full of love.

“George and Amal radiated love all night,” Baria said at the time. “The wedding was so unbelievably special, it was legendary. These three days – the friends, the families, the atmosphere, everything – will stay with me all the rest of my life.”

As for why they chose to get married in Italy, George told PEOPLE the two met there, so it made sense. “We have a home there. We knew that was where we wanted to get married,” he explained.

In the nine years since they tied the knot, the Clooney’s have welcomed twins, Alexander and Ella, 6.

For the Ticket to Paradise actor, getting married and starting a family was entirely unexpected.

"We never talked about marriage when we were dating," he told CBS Sunday Morning in 2020. "I asked her out of the blue [and it] took her a long time to say yes. I was on my knee for like 20 minutes, I finally said, 'Look, I'm gonna throw my hip out.'"

Once she did, though, his life was never the same.

"There is no question that having Amal in my life changed everything for me," he continued. "It was the first time that everything that she did and everything about her was infinitely more important than anything about me."

Of their children, he said, "And then we had these two knuckleheads. It is very fulfilling and something I wasn't at all... didn't see coming."

George also joked they've made a bit of a mistake when it came to raising them.

"We've made a terrible mistake," George told Gayle King on CBS Mornings last year. "We taught them Italian."

"But we don't speak Italian," he continued. "So, we've armed them with a language they can harm us with. And we both don't really know what they're saying."

Confirming the twins speak both Italian and French, George teased, "I'm from Kentucky, English is my second language."
