George Clooney helps to clear debris after floods hit Lake Como

George Clooney has been spotted helping locals in Lake Como after northern Italy was hit by flooding.

The Hollywood star was at his stunning holiday home in Laglio with his family this week when the area was struck by torrential rain, leading to floods and mudslides.

He wasted no time getting stuck in and according to reports was seen helping to clear up debris.

Clooney, 60, also spoke to Italian media, saying it could be a long and costly clear-up effort.

"It’s so much worse than anybody thinks. It’s much worse," he said.

"We were in Cernobbio and it was very bad. But here in Laglio it’s much worse.

"They think it could be years and millions of dollars before they fix it up. It’s going to be very bad."

However, the Ocean’s Eleven star said the town was “very resilient” and would bounce back.

"This town has been here forever, it’s going to continue," he said.

"And it’s going to be stronger and come back better."

Northern Italy was hit by the floods on Tuesday this week after days of rain, and Italian firefighters had to carry out more than 60 rescues.

Clooney was thought to be staying at Villa Oleandra at the time, along with his wife Amal and their four-year-old twins Ella and Alexander.

It has been reported that the luxurious villa was among the properties affected, as mud and debris washed up against it.

Clooney bought Villa Oleandra in 2002 for close to £10 million.
