George and Amal Clooney have a stunning real estate portfolio with properties in Los Angeles, Lake Como, Italy, France, and the U.K. However, not everything things seem to be super sunny at their Berkshire home along the banks of the River Thames. It appears that the dynamic duo have temporarily abandoned the estate after the winter storms brought increased flooding.

The couple bought the home after their 2014 wedding and were often spotted “out and about in the village,” but a nearby resident, Helen Moore, told the Daily Mail that she hasn’t “seen them for several months.” She added, “But you can’t really blame him because the weather’s been awful and the whole area has been severely affected by flooding, especially his house.” This is apparently the seventh flooding event over the last decade for the Clooneys, who have seen their tennis court, veranda, and gardens submerged in four feet of water.

George and Amal have retreated to the idyllic area of Provence with their six-year-old twins, Alexander and Ella, where they own a gorgeous French mansion,  Domaine Le Canadel. Another neighbor, Jessica Sherratt, understood why the Clooneys fled the area, noting, “As lovely as George’s house is, you wouldn’t want to be in it surrounded by so much water so if you can go to somewhere else, then why not? It’s probably also dangerous for their kids. Problems with flooding in this area have been getting worse each year and it’s happening a lot more regularly, which has had a huge impact on our lives.”

The Clooneys bought the 18th-century property in 2021 for over $8 million, but their recent move may have more to do with their kids than the inclement weather in the U.K. “George and Amal are thrilled with their decision to relocate to France. It’s a beautiful setting and completely private, which is what the Clooneys were looking for. It’s a fresh start for their family,” the insider shared with InTouch. “[Amal] was quite adamant about the move and had been suggesting it for years. She felt their home on Lake Como [in Italy] was too exposed, and she didn’t want the children going to school in L.A. or England.”

No matter what their reasoning was, the Clooneys might have to make a serious decision about the fate of their U.K. home. The winters aren’t getting any easier and the flood waters could soon encroach on the foundation of their beloved residence.
