The buzz began when the socialite and Danish royal, who became King in January, spent time together during his trip to Madrid

Genoveva Casanova is back on social media four months after denying romance rumors with King Frederik of Denmark.

On Tuesday, the socialite announced her return to Instagram in an upbeat post featuring two smiling selfies with her dog, sharing some background behind her break from the platform.

“Hello everyone! Here I am back! I want to thank all the people who have cared about me this past year, those who have understood my absence and my silence, and those who have sent me messages of love and support,” Casanova wrote to her 80,000 followers, per a translation. “You have no idea how much that meant to me.. Thank you very much! 🥰”

“It's been a few months where I needed peace and quiet, but I'm already doing my best to slowly be able to return to my normal life and meet my work commitments,” she continued. “Once again, a million thanks! Taj and I are leaving you our best smile with some pictures from our walk this afternoon and wishing you all a very good night! 🙏🏻❤️”

Casanova, 47, had not posted on Instagram since November 2023, which was the same month that she released a statement to shut down speculation of an affair with King Frederik, who was then the Crown Prince.

According to Hola!, the buzz began when Spanish outlets published photos of Frederik, 55, with the philanthropist, model and TV personality during a private trip to Madrid. The outlet reported that the two toured a Picasso exhibit at the Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum, walked through a park and had dinner together in the heart of the city. The outing reportedly came to be because a mutual friend who was originally set to accompany Frederik around Madrid got sick, and asked Casanova, who is an expert in Picasso art, to go in his stead.

After some speculated that they were romantically linked, Casanova fired back with a strong statement.

"I flatly deny the statements that suggest a romantic relationship between Prince Frederick and me. Any statement of this type is not only completely untrue but also distorts the facts in a malicious manner,” the socialite said, Hola! reported. “This is already in the hands of my lawyers, who will take care of the pertinent steps to protect my right to honor, truth and privacy.”

Doubling down, she also posted a letter from her lawyer on Instagram.

King Frederik has been married to Queen Mary since 2004, and they share four teenage children: Crown Prince Christian, 18, Princess Isabella, 16, and twins Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine, 13. The Royal House of Denmark did not comment on Frederik’s outing in Madrid with Casanova, and Frederik and Mary put on a united front when they stepped out together on the day she released the statement. The royal couple carried on hosting King Felipe and Queen Letizia of Spain during their three-day stay with a night out at the Glyptoteket Museum in Copenhagen.

In early December, then-Princess Mary traveled without her husband to her native Australia to visit her family ahead of Christmas. She was joined by her two youngest children. According to the palace, Frederik had plans to join her the following week.

Everything changed for the family a few weeks later, when Queen Margrethe used her annual New Year’s speech to announce that she was abdicating the throne on January 14. The news caused shock across Denmark, as Queen Margrethe, 83, previously hinted that she intended to reign for life, and the move would make her the first Danish sovereign to voluntarily step down from the throne in nearly 900 years.

As her eldest son and successor, Frederik became the new King of Denmark, and some wondered if Queen Margrethe’s unexpected decision was driven to save her son’s marriage.

“It’s possible that the Queen took this action because she would have been terrified of the marriage breaking up and the royal family losing Mary. It would have caused major problems. The Queen has always seen Mary as a tremendous asset,” longtime author and royal commentator Phil Dampier told The Telegraph of the abdication announcement.

“It just seems an extraordinary coincidence that she should make this unexpected announcement just a couple of months after stories emerged of the Crown Prince supposedly having an affair,” continued Dampier, who has covered the Danish royal family for over 20 years. “In two weeks’ time, the Prince and Princess will be pitched together as King and Queen and they will have to get on with it. The Queen may be thinking that they will patch up their differences and it will save their marriage.”

On Jan. 14, the 52nd anniversary of Queen Margrethe’s accession to the throne, the shift was made official when the monarch signed a declaration of her abdication at Christiansborg Palace. The declaration made her eldest son King Frederik X and his wife Queen Mary, while their eldest son Christian took his father’s former Crown Prince title and the couple’s three younger children each moved up a spot in the line of succession.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen then pronounced Frederik as King on the balcony of Christiansborg Castle, where he appeared emotional and made a short speech. Bringing his family front and center on the historic day, he was then joined by his wife and their children on the palace balcony.

In a show of affection, King Frederik and Queen Mary surprised the crowd with a kiss, prompting cheers from those gathered below.
