Revered civil rights movement leaders Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (played by Kelvin Harrison Jr.) and Malcolm X (Aaron Pierre) come together in the full trailer for Genius: MLK/X, which was released on Thursday.

The above sneak peek depicts a chance meeting between both icons while waiting for a press conference on March 26, 1964. Both men had ventured to Washington D.C. to hear the Senate debate on the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The encounter only lasted a minute, and they never saw each other again.

Premiering the first two episodes Thursday, Feb. 1 at 9/8c on National Geographic — Episode 1 will air on ABC; both episodes will stream the next day on Disney+ and Hulu — the biographical drama series will simultaneously explore the formative years, pioneering accomplishments, dueling philosophies and key personal relationships of both thought leaders.

“While King advanced racial equality through nonviolent activism,” the official synopsis reads, “X advocated for Black empowerment, identity and self-determination.”

The eight-episode series also brings their wives, Coretta Scott King (Weruche Opia) and Betty Shabazz (Jayme Lawson), to the forefront and “shows them as formidable equals of the Movement,” the description continues. “While King and X met only once and often challenged each other’s views, the two visionaries, with their wives leading by their sides, ultimately rose to pioneer a movement that lives on today.”

In one of his final roles, Ron Cephas Jones (who died in August) will play Elijah Muhammad, the leader of the Nation of Islam.

Survivor’s Remorse and Power writers Raphael Jackson Jr. and Damione Macedon serve as the showrunners and executive-produce alongside Jeff Stetson (Shots Fired, Containment), who penned the pilot, and Channing Godfrey Peoples (Roar, Miss Juneteenth), who directed the first episode. Additional EPs include Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, Kristen Zolner, Reggie Rock Bythewood, Gina Prince-Bythewood and Francie Calfo.

Ambassador Shabazz, eldest daughter of Malcolm X and Betty Shabazz, serves as a consulting producer.
