General Hospital Shake-Up: Patrick Mulcahey Out as Co-Head Writer

Barely three months into the gig, veteran soap scribe Patrick Mulcahey has been released from his position as co-head writer at ABC’s General Hospital, sources confirm for TVLine.

Chris Van Etten, who was one of the head writers removed in late January to make room for Mulcahey, is back on staff as a breakdown writer, with Liz Korte currently serving as sole head writer.

TVLine hears that the material penned by the Mulcahey/Korte team will air through mid-summer.

It was in late January that head writers Van Etten and Dan O’Connor were replaced with Mulcahey and Korte, the latter of whom has been a GH scribe since 1994; she also co-created the short-lived Night Shift spinoff for (sigh) SOAPnet.

Mulcahey’s head writer credits started with CBS’ Guiding Light in 1982. Following a stint at NBC’s Santa Barbara (where he had a hand in steering the Eden/Cruz and Julia/Mason romances), he returned to GL, as coheadwiter, in 1994.

After first joining GH as a script writer in 1996, Mulcahey rose to the positions of associate head writer and breakdown writer.

One month ago, GH racked up 11 total Daytime Emmy Award nominations — second only to the 12 amassed by both The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful — including for Outstanding Daytime Drama Series and Outstanding Writing for a Daytime Drama
