Not a bad way to celebrate 60 years on the air. “General Hospital,” ABC’s sexagenarian soap opera set in Port Charles, was the big winner at the 2023 Daytime Emmy Awards taking six prizes including Best Drama Series, which it has now claimed 16 times, extending its record for the most wins ever in the category. Check out the complete list of winners here, with more awards set to go out on Saturday, December 16, at the Creative Arts and Lifestyle Awards.

In addition to Best Drama Series, “GH” won Best Drama Directing Team, setting a new record for the most wins in that category with 14. And the series dominated with four wins out of the six performance categories, though not always for the actors we were expecting.

Gold Derby’s odds favored Nicholas Chavez for Best Supporting Actor, but that award went to his “GH” co-star Robert Gossett, who previously won in 2022 as a guest star on the show. And while we thought “GH’s” Kelly Thiebaud would win a second consecutive Best Supporting Actress trophy, the academy instead honored her late co-star Sonya Eddy with a posthumous prize. Our odds did correctly anticipate the wins for Best Younger Performer Eden McCoy and nefarious Best Guest Performer Alley Mills.

Surprises came in the lead acting categories as well. We tipped Billy Flynn (“Days of Our Lives”) and Michelle Stafford (“The Young and the Restless”) to win. Instead we got a double dose of “The Bold and the Beautiful.” Thorsten Kaye won Best Actor for the first time in his career after several decades in daytime and six previous noms as a leading men for “Port Charles,” “All My Children” and now “B&B.” And Jacqueline MacInnes Wood continued “B&B’s” tradition of dominant leading ladies. She won Best Actress for the third time, following three wins in the category for Susan Flannery and three for Heather Tom.

Speaking of dominant performances, outside the world of soaps Kelly Clarkson continued her winning streak, claiming Best Daytime Talk Series for the third year in a row for her self-titled program. And she was awarded for hosting the show for the fourth year in a row. How long will her dynasty continue?
