Gaylord softball goes 6-0 in Canton, baseball drops a pair to Charlevoix

CANTON — It’s not quite the postseason yet, but the Gaylord softball is certainly preparing like it’s right around the corner.

In one of their biggest weekend’s yet, the Blue Devils traveled to the Michigan Challenge in Canton and met six teams between Saturday and Sunday, going 6-0 in those games to build an 11-game winning streak.

On Saturday, Gaylord earned a 5-1 win over Portage Northern, a 5-2 victory over Stoney Creek and then a 9-2 win over Lakeview.

Sunday then came with a 12-4 win over Canton, Allen Park went down with a 9-2 final and Whiteford fell to the Blue Devils by a 13-4 score.

In the opener against Portage Northern, Aubrey Jones earned an 11 strikeout victory over seven innings in the circle, Jayden Jones tripled in a run and Abby Radulski singled twice and drove in one run.

Jayden Jones then earned a seven-inning victory in game two, striking out four along the way, then Alexis Shepherd led with a pair of doubles at the plate.

Aubrey Jones and Alexis Kozlowski also each doubled, with Kozlowski adding three RBIs.

The Lakeview win Saturday was caped with Radulski pitching and going the distance across six innings, striking out three batters.

Kennedy Wangler tripled in a run, Shepherd went 3-for-4 with a double, Aubrey Jones singled in a pair of runs and Addison Wangler singled twice and had an RBI.

On Sunday, host Canton gave up 12 hits in the 12-run loss, led by Jayden Jones with a 3-for-4 game that came with two doubles, three RBIs and three runs scored.

Taylor Moeggenberg doubled in a pair of runs, Alexis Shepherd went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and Aubrey Jones and Radulski each had a pair of RBIs.

Jayden Jones earned the pitching win, striking out a pair in an efficient five innings.

Allen Park went down in a 9-2 final after a strong pitching performance across seven innings from Aubrey Jones, with six strikeouts in the process.

Jayden Jones had a pair of home runs and three RBIs at the plate, Radulski doubled and singled, Kennedy Wangler went 3-for-4 and Moeggenberg singled twice and drove in a run.

The final game of the weekend came as another big one at the plate, with Aubrey Jones adding a home run, a single and four RBIs, Kozlowski had a home run, single and an RBI, Jayden Jones doubled and singled with an RBI, Moeggenberg singled twice and drove in two and Kennedy Wangler singled twice and had an RBI.

Jayden Jones and Radulski split the pitching, striking out just one batter combined across five innings.

The undefeated weekend moved Gaylord to 20-2 overall on the season and they’ll next head to Traverse City Central on Tuesday, May 17 for a Big North Conference matchup.

BASEBALL

Gaylord at Charlevoix

CHARLEVOIX — Charlevoix baseball extended its win streak to eight straight games when they welcomed in Gaylord late last week and earned wins of 7-6 and 14-3.

Game one came in walk-off fashion for the host Rayders, as the two sat tied at 6-6 after three innings then again up until the bottom of the sixth.

Charlevoix’s Troy Nickel singled on in the inning, then Josh House was later intentionally walked by the Blue Devils. Jack Jarema then singled, advancing the runners a base, then Ryan Pearl stepped up to bring Nickel around to score on a single to third.

Jarema went 4-for-4 for the game, Pearl singled twice and had the RBI, Caleb Stuck doubled in a run, Patrick Sterrett doubled and Jake Claflin had an RBI single.

Bryce Johnson and Owen Waha split the pitching across three innings, with Johnson allowing five hits and two walks, while striking out six, while Waha struck out three and didn’t allow a base runner over his three innings.

Gaylord had Jayden Hendrian double and drive in three runs, Luke Enders doubled in a run and Cole Dexter and Adam Daust each had RBI singles.

Enders took the loss with 11 hits allowed and six strikeouts in five and two thirds.

In the 14-3 Rayder win, Waha put together another solid pitching performance with five innings, six hits and a walk issued and four strikeouts.

Waha also tripled, doubled and drove in three runs, Stuck singled, doubled and had three RBIs, Sterrett and Nickel each singled twice and Pearl had two RBIs and a single. House also drove in two runs.

For Gaylord, Hendrian had an RBI double and Ben Locker singled twice.

Locker also took the loss, though just two of the 14 runs came earned against. He also struck out four batters.

Gaylord, now 10-9-1 overall on the season, will get back to the diamond on Tuesday, May 17 at Traverse City Central.
