Gavin Rossdale Says He 'Feels Bad for His Kids' After Going Through Gwen Stefani Divorce: 'Quite Debilitating'

The former couple shares sons Kingston, 17, Zuma, 15, and Apollo, 10

Gavin Rossdale is opening up about how his divorce with Gwen Stefani has affected the former couple's kids.

While appearing on this week's episode of the Amy & T.J. podcast with Amy Robach and T.J. Holmes, the Bush frontman, 58, commented on navigating his divorce with Stefani, with whom he shares sons Kingston, 17, Zuma, 15, and Apollo, 10. Rossdale is also dad to daughter Daisy, 34, from a previous relationship.

Sharing that he "never thought he'd get divorced," the singer said that he didn't want his kids to have the same experience as him.

"I feel bad for my kids, that's it," Rossdale said. "I wish I could have found a way to not have that in their lives. It wasn't fun for me to come from a broken home...it can be quite debilitating for kids...the overriding thing is you don't want to let your kids down."

Although he didn't explicitly name Stefani, the dad of three added, "The biggest thing would be when you see the kids that sometimes there's a loss. It'd be nice if there was more of a connection with the person who made them with me."

"I got to a lot of events where there's 'the other team,' so to speak and I just feel really proud of myself in my consistency as a father," Rossdale says, seemingly referencing Stefani and her husband Blake Shelton. "I know in my heart that I'm super consistent."

However, Rossdale noted he doesn't feel comfortable saying anything negative about his ex.

"Less said, soonest mended and I said nothing," he explained of the divorce. "I'm handcuffed because I would never want to overly say anything negative about their mom. That's just not right."

In November, Rossdale spoke to PEOPLE on set of The Talk's Halloween episode and shared that his son Apollo is already taking after his parents.

"Apollo sang me a song last night for his play," Rossdale began, "and it's really upsetting because I based my tour around his [flag] football season."

"He's quarterback. He's really good. When we were booking the tour, I said, 'Well I have to stay in L.A. to this date because I can't miss it," Rossdale told PEOPLE. "I knew it would mess something up, but I was determined to not miss him."

"I missed the game last season, the last game of the season, the playoffs. It was crushing. I had to watch it over FaceTime. I booked my tour around it and I knew something would give."

"He freaking got the lead in his own play and I don't come back until the ninth and he's on the first. Anyway, he sang me a song last night and it was incredible from top to bottom and just beautiful pitch, melody, voice, tone, knew all the words."

"I was floored. It's great," the proud dad added.
