California Gov. Gavin Newsom ably held off Republican challenger Brian Dahle in Tuesday’s midterms, while Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis won reelection to his second term in office, defeating Democrat Charlie Crist.
Last year, Newsom also survived a recall election.
Former Trump press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders has been elected as the new governor of Arkansas, defeating Democratic nominee Chris Jones.
In Illinois, J.B. Pritzker has won a second term as governor, defeating Republican Darren Bailey.
In other notable races, Massachusetts Democratic Attorney General Maura Healey triumphed over Trump-endorsed Geoff Diehl, making history as the first openly gay person and first woman to be elected governor. In Maryland, Democrat Wes Moore’s historic win is the first time a Black politician will hold the top office in the state.
Republican Gov. Greg Abbott won reelection to a third term in Texas, defeating Democrat Beto O’Rourke.
