Garry Marshall Says Anne Hathaway's Into 'Princess Diaries 3'...But What Does She Say?

According to filmmaker Garry Marshall, a third Princess Diaries movie is in the works and will star Anne Hathaway, the actress who wore the tiara in the first two movies.

Marshall, who directed The Princess Diaries (2001) and The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement (2004), both based on Meg Cabot’s young-adult book series, tells People magazine that he and Hathaway recently confirmed their interest in pursuing a follow-up.

“I was with Anne Hathaway a couple weeks ago, it looks like we want to do Princess Diaries 3 in Manhattan,” he said. “Anne Hathaway is very pregnant, so we have to wait until she has the baby and then I think we’re going to do it.”

Marshall’s choice of phrasing – “I think we’re going to do it” – and the fact that Hathaway has not yet confirmed this information suggest that it may be best to reserve one’s Mia Thermopolis enthusiasm until the film’s status has been more officially confirmed.

It’s worth noting that less than a year ago, rumors of a forthcoming Princess Diaries 3 circulated online and were promptly debunked by Disney, who said no such sequel or reboot was in the works. Certainly things could have changed since then, but at the very least, the movie will have to wait until after Hathaway gives birth and officially commits to shooting it.

The Oscar winner confirmed in January via Instagram that she and husband Adam Shulman are expecting their first child. The actress has not publicly shared her due date, but E! Online reported that the baby is scheduled to arrive this spring, perhaps as soon as this month.
