‘Game of Thrones’ Petition for ‘Competent Writers’ Grabs Over 400,000 Signees

Letdown by the final season of “Game of Thrones”? You’re not the only one.

As of Thursday morning, more than 400,000 people have signed a Change.org petition for the hit HBO series to remake its final season with “competent writers.”

Showrunners “David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have proven themselves to be woefully incompetent writers when they have no source material (i.e. the books) to fall back on,” the petition, started by Dylan D. reads. “This series deserves a final season that makes sense. Subvert my expectations and make it happen, HBO!”

Benioff and Weiss leaned on George R.R. Martin’s fantasy novels up through the show’s sixth season, but have since been on their own, albeit with Martin still offering some guidance. What the petition would change about the show’s 8th season isn’t explicitly mentioned. Fans, many of them taking their displeasure out on Twitter, have vented in recent weeks about episodes being too dark, literally, especially with Daenerys Targaryen’s sudden heel turn last week.

Despite the fan backlash, Benioff and Weiss seem to be doing alright: Disney has tapped the pair to lead its 2022 “Star Wars” film, following the conclusion of the Skywalker saga when Episode IX comes out later this year. HBO probably doesn’t mind, either, with the final season pulling in a record number of viewers.

The final episode of “Game of Thrones” will air this upcoming Sunday on HBO.
