See a much more in-depth look at the new sci-fi epic from Westeros hive mind David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, and their fellow series creator Alexander Woo.

David Benioff and D.B. Weiss already adapted one sprawling genre epic into a massive TV hit with HBO's Game of Thrones. Can they do it again?

The showrunners are back with 3 Body Problem, the upcoming sci-fi drama for which Netflix premiered a new trailer out of the Las Vegas-hosted tech trade show CES on Tuesday. A sneak peek was shown last year in June, but there's been no new reveals from the intriguing project until now.

Based on author Liu Cixin's internationally recognized book series, which began with 2008's The Three-Body Problem, the Netflix adaptation is a complex tale involving one woman's decision in 1960s China that reverberates across space and time. The main drama in the trailer centers around slain scientists in the present day.

"Someone or something is targeting scientists," says Da Shi, an intelligence officer played by Marvel star Benedict Wong. "They're going after our best and brightest," adds Thomas Wade, the leader of the world’s most elite intelligence operation, played by Game of Thrones alum Liam Cunningham.

It seems nanotech trailblazer Auggie Salazar (Baby Driver and Ambulance's Eiza González) is one of the next victims. She keeps seeing a sequence of numbers that appears to be counting down to something, which is consistent with the recent string of dead scientists. "Whatever it is, it's watching and listening," Wong's Da Shi says of the mysterious, unseen culprit.

Netflix released a teaser ahead of this week's trailer that coincided with a special experience set up at CES designed to immerse attendees into the world of 3 Body Problem. The teaser and the activation both involved a mysterious otherworldly headset that also features heavily in the new trailer.

The books focused on events told across the past, present, and future, involving Earth's encounter with an alien civilization. However, Alexander Woo, who co-created and executive produces the series with Benioff and Weiss, told Netflix's Tudum website, "What we are hoping to do is to convey the experience — if not necessarily the exact details — of the novel onto the screen. What stayed, we hope, is the sense of wonderment and the sense of scope, of scale, where the problems are no longer just the problems of an individual or even a nation, but of an entire species."

Also starring are Jovan Adepo, John Bradley, Rosalind Chao, Jess Hong, Marlo Kelly, Alex Sharp, Sea Shimooka, Zine Tseng, Saamer Usmani, and Jonathan Pryce. While 3 Body Problem had previously been set to premiere in January, the show will now bow on Netflix on March 21.
