'Game of Thrones' Big Finale Twist Is Exactly What George R.R. Martin Has Planned For His Books
The good news for anyone who thought the final few seasons of Game of Thrones were an absolute mess is that there are more books coming! Yes, George R.R. Martin is allegedly writing the finale to his series-which he's been working on since the '70s. But, the question was, after Game of Thrones' disappointing finale, what would be different about the ending that Martin has planned?
In a post on his blog after the Game of Thrones finale, Martin asked himself that very same question. To which he responded: "Well… yes. And no. And yes. And no. And yes. And no. And yes."
He continued:
I am working in a very different medium than David and Dan, never forget. They had six hours for this final season. I expect these last two books of mine will fill 3000 manuscript pages between them before I’m done… and if more pages and chapters and scenes are needed, I’ll add them. And of course the butterfly effect will be at work as well; those of you who follow this Not A Blog will know that I’ve been talking about that since season one. There are characters who never made it onto the screen at all, and others who died in the show but still live in the books… so if nothing else, the readers will learn what happened to Jeyne Poole, Lady Stoneheart, Penny and her pig, Skahaz Shavepate, Arianne Martell, Darkstar, Victarion Greyjoy, Ser Garlan the Gallant, Aegon VI, and a myriad of other characters both great and small that viewers of the show never had the chance to meet. And yes, there will be unicorns… of a sort…
In classic George R.R. Martin fashion this says a lot and at the same time nothing at all.
But HBO's Making Game of Thrones website quietly revealed specifics of how Martin's planned ending will be the same as the show's. In an interview, Bran Stark actor Isaac Hempstead-Wright explained that his character becoming the new king of Westeros was part of Martin's plan for the ending.
“David and Dan told me there were two things George R.R. Martin had planned for Bran-and that was the Hodor revelation, and that he would be king. So that’s pretty special to be directly involved in something that is part of George’s vision. It was a really nice way to wrap it up,” Hempstead-Wright.
Martin told David Benioff and D.B. Weiss what his big ending would be back in 2013 during the show's third season, when it was clear that Game of Thrones would pass his books. During this meeting, Martin revealed what Benioff and Weiss described as "three holy shit moments." One was Stannis Barathon sacrificing Shireen in Season Five. Another one was the tragic origins of Hodor's name. Now, if we're assuming that the third is Bran ending up on the Iron Throne, then what does that mean for the other big twist in Season Eight, Daenerys becoming the Mad Queen?
We'll just have to wait and see what Martin does in his books that he's definitely writing. We can hold out faith that Martin will actually pull this ending off in the way fans deserve.
