‘Game of Thrones’ Season 7: A Surprising Return, Delays, and a Spinoff Update

Game of Thrones Season 7 premiere is almost a year to do the day after the Season 6 finale, so in the meantime, any and all scraps of news have to keep us afloat. Like this morsel about an unexpected return: Walder Frey, played by David Bradley, had a rather memorable demise last season — ate own sons baked into a pie, throat slit — but he’ll be somehow resurrected for next season, perhaps through Arya’s ability to take a person’s face. Walder Frey’s rise from the grave was confirmed by actor Bradley’s résumé, which was recently updated with the appearance.

We were also afforded the vaguest of updates for a potential Game of Thrones spinoff. HBO’s president of programming, Casey Bloys, spoke at the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour and dropped this completely meatless nugget:

“All I can say is that we’re exploring it. We don’t have any scripts, we’re not even close to saying ‘Oh let’s do this.’ But it’s a big enough property that we would be foolish not to explore it.”

So, yeah, HBO is totally gonna maybe kinda perhaps, if the scripts are good enough, do a spinoff! Or not! Who knows?

What we do know is that making a spectacle of this magnitude takes time. A lot of it. Iain Glen, who plays Ser Jorah Mormont, shed some light on the delays:

“I think the scale and size of the set pieces, the world that is being created — it’s just getting more and more extraordinary and they feel they need that time to shoot seven hours as opposed to 10.”

Season 8, the series’ end, could potentially take two years to shoot. Or a week. Or will it be a spinoff?! Probably not! Who knows!

Game of Thrones will return to HBO this summer.
