‘Game of Thrones’ Recap: Dragons and the Battle for Winterfell

Game of Thrones got off to a hot start Sunday night when Daenerys showed the masters of Slaver’s Bay just how deadly her dragons can be by torching one of their ships. She then left Grey Worm and Tyrian behind to send a message to all of the slavers by killing two of them and leaving one to return so he could share what happened.

The majority of the show took place in the north as Jon Snow squared off against Ramsay Bolton in a fight for Winterfell. It started with Ramsay freeing Rickon Stark and then shooting arrows at him as he ran across the field. Jon Snow jumped on his horse to go get Rickon, but just as he got to him, one of Ramsay’s arrows went right through the little Rickon’s chest.

The death of Rickon sent Jon into a rage as he took off toward Ramsay’s army by himself. Once he realized his mistake, Jon knew there was nothing he could do but draw his sword and get ready to fight. Luckily, his troops showed up at just the right moment and the next few minutes were a confusing, but beautifully shot, bloody mess.

Just when Ramsay’s forces seemed to be too much for Jon’s ragtag army to handle, Littlefinger’s men predictably rode in to the rescue. With Ramsay’s men defeated, he retreated back to the castle, hoping to wait out a possible siege. Unfortunately for Ramsay, he didn’t count on the giant being able to punch through the gate. Jon then came face to face with Ramsay, knocked him to the ground, and repeatedly punched that face.

The episode ended with Sansa visiting her husband, who was tied up in a cell. After they had a few parting words, Ramsay’s starving dogs entered his cell and started sniffing his blood. Even though they were loyal to him, the dogs were so hungry that they started eating Ramsay. With the sound of screaming and dogs barking, Sansa walked away with a smile on her face.

Game of Thrones airs Sundays at 9 p.m. on HBO.
