Gallery to host 'Honoring the Hazel Pete Legacy: Chehalis Basketry' exhibition

Nov. 1—The Leonor R. Fuller Gallery at South Puget Sound Community College (SPSCC) will honor the legacy of a longtime "matriarch" of the Chehalis Tribe in an upcoming art exhibition.

The gallery will host its 15th annual Native American Art exhibition, titled "Honoring the Hazel Pete Legacy: Chehalis Basketry."

The exhibition will include traditional and contemporary baskets woven by Hazel Pete's family. The exhibition will be on display from Nov. 13 to Dec. 8. An opening reception will be held Nov. 17 from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

Hazel Pete was a sixth-generation master weaver who gained recognition for her traditional basket weaving, according to previous reporting by The Chronicle. Artwork from seventh, eighth and ninth-generation weavers will be included in the exhibit.

The exhibition will include coil and woven basketry, a cattail mat lean-to, clothing, storage baskets, a storyteller doll diorama and contemporary glass baskets made at the Museum of

Glass in Tacoma, according to a release from SPSCC.

In 2001, Pete received the Washington State Governor's Heritage Award. Pete died in 2003 at the age of 89.

The Leonor R. Fuller Gallery at the Kenneth J. Minnaert Center for the Arts is located at 2011 Mottman Road SW in Olympia. It's open from noon to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. Parking is free.
