Gabrielle Union is discussing the rewards of motherhood later on in life.

The actress, 50, said in an Instagram video posted Friday that she "became a mom at the right time" and shared that she had been able to “heal” from past traumas and not pass them on to daughter Kaavia James, 4.

“People always ask, ‘Is it worth it? Having kids later in life? There’s a lot that goes into that answer,” Union said in the video as she stood in a dressing room applying cream. “But in a nutshell: hell yeah, it's been worth it.”

Union welcomed Kaavia via surrogate in November 2018 with husband Dwyane Wade, 41, after the couple married in 2014. The actress is also stepmom to Wade’s children, Zaire, 21, and Zaya, 16, shared with ex-wife Siovaughn Funches, and Xavier, 9, with Aja Metoyer.

“It's changed my life in so many wondrous ways that it does make me wish I had done it earlier, just so I have even more time with Kaav. I even have more time as a mom,” Union continued.

The Perfect Find star then reflected on the timing of her journey to motherhood, saying, "I became a mom at the right time, because I was healed.”

“And I had committed to healing eternally, so I didn’t pass all that generational trauma onto Kaav,” Union shared. “And had I been a day younger, even, certainly 10, 15, 20 years before, I would have passed along way too many traumatic things to my child.”

“I didn’t really get into healing from all of my traumas, healing my soul, healing my aura, if you will. I wasn’t in a place to even take care of myself, much less our little miracle,” the actress admitted.

“So for me, it's absolutely worth it. She is the best thing that's ever happened to me,” Union concluded with a smile.

“Choosing to heal past traumas was the best preparation for motherhood @theproudlyco,” Union added in the caption for the post, which was shared in collaboration with PROUDLY, her baby care brand co-founded with her husband Wade.

Union says she "healed' from past traumas before becoming a mom

In March, Union opened up more about her role as a mom at the 2023 Film Independent Spirit Awards following her and husband Wades’ emotional speech at the NAACP Image Awards championing the fight for LGBTQ rights.

The speech came a day after Zaya legally changed her name and underwent gender assignment.

“Your kids are worth fighting for,” Union told with Extra at the time. "Your children are not disposable and even when faced with something that you might not be as familiar with or comfortable with [it is] not an excuse to throw your kids away.”

"It makes you want to fight," she said. "It makes you want to dig in and not only fight for your kids but everybody's kids."
