Gabrielle Union Is Saving Her Met Gala Outfits for Kaavia So She’ll Have a ‘Little Bit of Her Mom’ (Exclusive)

The actress shares her daughter with husband Dwyane Wade

Gabrielle Union's daughter may not be old enough to raid her closet just yet, but the actress is making sure her stash is ready for when the time comes.

Speaking to PEOPLE about her new ambassador role for Knix, Union, 51, shared that she's been archiving some of her clothing pieces for her 5-year-old daughter Kaavia James, whom she shares with husband Dwyane Wade, 42.

"So I have a storage that's just full of things that I'm like, oh, I want to be able to tell this story or how I felt wearing this," the proud mom told PEOPLE. "So it started with me putting in this beautiful display case my first Met ball outfit."

"I was also in the museum and then I realized maybe I don't have to display it in my home, but I can put it in a temperature-controlled space that preserves the material and the memories. So even if [Kaavia] never wants to wear any of it, she will have this little bit of her mom and the stories that go with it."

In addition to daughter Kaavia, Union is stepmom to Wade's three kids Zaire, 21, Zaya, 16, and Xavier, 10, whom he shares with ex-wife Siovaughn Funches. The basketball player is also the legal guardian of his nephew, Dahveon Morris, 21.

In January, the Bring It On star shared a side-by-side photo of herself and Kaavia in the same outfit, proving their uncanny resemblance.

After Complex posted a series of throwback celebrity prom photos — including one of Union from 1991 — the actress shared a photo of her daughter recreating the formal look on her Instagram Stories.

In the photo from her “senior ball,” the actress wore a black gown with white ruffled sleeves, accessorizing with black gloves, a pearl necklace and matching earrings.

Kaavia wore a similar dress in her recreation, which was complete with puffed sleeves and a pair of pearl earrings.

Writing over the photo, Union declared that her daughter "definitely wore it better."
