Gabrielle Union's active family is now used to life on the go.

Speaking with PEOPLE about her collaboration with Great Wolf Lodge on a family-friendly workout — "Adventure Training: Get Fit with the Great Wolf Pack" — the Being Mary Jane actress, 50, says that her family's active life has gotten easier with time.

The mom spent her summer traveling with husband Dwyane Wade and daughter Kaavia James, 4, and while it's a "non-issue" today, Union is open to the fact that it didn't start out that way.

"When she was younger, it was not great. We would literally hand out 'I'm sorry' cards and earplugs to the people around us," she tells PEOPLE. "But once we started traveling more, she's been great. We download all her favorites on her iPad and she's got her headphones. She's really such a great traveler now."

When the Wades — which also includes daughter Zaya, 16, and sons Xavier Zechariah, 9, and Zaire, 21 — are stateside, Great Wolf Lodge locations across the country are like a second home.

"My father, Kaav's grandfather, lives in Arizona by a Great Wolf Lodge there. There's one in Southern California that we've been very lucky to visit anytime there's family or a time where you want to take a bunch of kids somewhere that they'll have a great time."

Union got some help from longtime trainer Gregg Miele, father to two young boys himself, in coming up with a workout the whole family can appreciate.

"When you wake up and your kids are on 10 and you're on like 1½, it's great for those mornings. There are days where your kids get up and you need to burn off some of that morning energy even before you hit the park," she shares.

"It's a great place to start. We do some stretching, go into some strength moves and then cardio, and we have a cooldown. It's cute and fun and sweet and helps with those of us who have children who are very active in the mornings."

Locally, the family enjoys getting outside, whether it's hiking or swimming.

"We love to hike around our community. My little sister, who lives with us and helps with Kaav, she's like a flora and fauna expert, I have no idea how. So along these hikes, my sister is pointing out every tree, every plant, every flower," she shares. "It's kind of become our running thing in the family, enjoying these hikes together."
