Union and Wade welcomed daughter Kaavia in November 2018. The actress is also stepmom to Wade’s children, Zaire, 21, and Zaya, 16, shared with ex-wife Siovaughn Funches, and Xavier, 9, with Aja Metoyer.

The actress said in an Instagram video posted earlier in October that she "became a mom at the right time" and shared that she had been able to “heal” from past traumas and not pass them on to daughter Kaavia.

“People always ask, ‘Is it worth it? Having kids later in life? There’s a lot that goes into that answer,” Union said in the video as she stood in a dressing room applying cream. “But in a nutshell: hell yeah, it's been worth it.”

“It's changed my life in so many wondrous ways that it does make me wish I had done it earlier, just so I have even more time with Kaav. I even have more time as a mom,” Union continued.

The Perfect Find star then reflected on the timing of her journey to motherhood, saying, "I became a mom at the right time, because I was healed.”

In March, Union opened up more about her role as a mom at the 2023 Film Independent Spirit Awards following her and husband Wades’ emotional speech at the NAACP Image Awards championing the fight for LGBTQ rights.

The speech came a day after daughter Zaya was granted an official name change and assignment of gender.

“Your kids are worth fighting for,” Union told Extra at the time. "Your children are not disposable and even when faced with something that you might not be as familiar with or comfortable with [it is] not an excuse to throw your kids away.”

"It makes you want to fight," she said. "It makes you want to dig in and not only fight for your kids but everybody's kids."
