Gabrielle Union dragged for 'double standard' over Gwen Stefani costume — but people are missing 1 huge point
It’s Halloween, which means a handful of celebrities will offend the masses with their costumes. (Here’s looking at you, Shaun White.) But for some reason, “racist Twitter” — as BET dubbed it — is coming after Gabrielle Union.
Union dressed up as Gwen Stefani for her ’90s-themed 46th birthday bash, taking her inspiration from No Doubt’s music video for the 1995 single “Spiderwebs.” Saturday night’s costume party lined up perfectly with Halloween, and pretty much everyone loved her look — including Gwen Stefani.
However, some took issue with the fact that Union dressed up as a white woman, calling it a “double standard,” particularly in the wake of last week’s Megyn Kelly scandal. (Kelly had her morning show pulled from NBC after making controversial remarks about blackface as a costume.)
“White hair wig, close enough to White face #DoubleStandard. If you don’t want Black face do not and I repeat do not do White face!” one user tweeted — and deleted.
Others dragged Union with a similar argument.
So Gabrielle Union can go as a white girl and its not frowned on? This is double standard ass world are living in. https://t.co/n8BpLWaAhy

@GMA
So it’s ok for Gabrielle Union to dress as Gwen Stefani a white girl? But it’s not ok for Meghan Kelly to dress as Diana Ross? Can I just say double standard and pure racism towards Meghan Kelly?— CaptIDKanymore🐾 (@missymoss4) October 29, 2018
So didn’t Megan Kelly just get fired for saying black face and white face were okay if you were dressing up as a person? Crazy time… Susan

People are missing one main point here — Union did not do “whiteface.” In fact, many lauded the actress for dressing up as someone from a different race without changing her skin color.
Hey Y’all! LOOK! @itsgabrielleu dressed up as someone from a different race and didn’t find it necessary to paint her face. SEE! YOU CAN DRESS UP AS ANOTHER RACE WITHOUT BEING A DOUCHE. Please take notes. https://t.co/GmfTelZkeP

Gabrielle Union dressed as No Doubt-era Gwen Stefani without altering her skin. And she looked great, no doubt!
It’s not that hard people; dress the part and people will get it without changing your skin color. pic.twitter.com/ltbOtv5AF4

It’s too early for this foolishness.. people are saying that @itsgabrielleu dressing up as G Stefani is a double standard to what Idiot kelly said about Blackface. Gabby DID NOT PAINT HER SKIN WHITE. The race of someone should never be synonymous to a costume!! Just Dumb.. AF

It’s really not that hard, people.
