‘Furiosa’ to premiere at 2024 Cannes Film Festival

Immortan Joe is officially heading back to the French Riviera.

“Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” director George Miller’s highly anticipated prequel to his Academy Award-winning 2015 action film “Mad Max: Fury Road,” will make its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival.

The film will screen out of competition on May 15 at the Grand Theatre Lumière at le Palais des Festivals.

It will be Miller’s third film to premiere at Cannes, following “Three Thousand Years of Longing” in 2022 and “Mad Max: Fury Road” in 2015. He has also twice been a jury member at Cannes and served as jury president in 2016.

“Fury Road” went on to win six Oscars out of 10 nominations on its way to becoming regarded as one of the greatest action films of all time, so expectations for “Furiosa” are high. 

Anya Taylor-Joy takes over the role of the title character from Charlize Theron. In the prequel, she’s out for revenge against the people who took her away from her family as she tries to get back home. Chris Hemsworth also stars as Warlord Dementus, the leader of a sinister biker gang. 

Here’s the official description: “As the world fell, young Furiosa is snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers and falls into the hands of a great Biker Horde led by the Warlord Dementus. Sweeping through the Wasteland, they come across the Citadel presided over by The Immortan Joe. While the two Tyrants war for dominance, Furiosa must survive many trials as she puts together the means to find her way home.”

Warner Bros. released a new trailer for the film earlier this week. 

“Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” opens in theaters on May 24.
