Frustrated Daniil Medvedev tosses money at umpire chair

In a bizarre situation on Wednesday at Wimbledon, Russian Daniil Medvedev melted down and threw coins at the base of the umpire’s chair.

The 21-year-old was coming off a stunning upset victory over fifth seeded Stan Wawrinka in the first round, but grew frustrated over what he deemed were unfair calls in his second round match against Ruben Bemelmans.

After going up 2-0 in the fifth set, Medvedev was on the wrong side of a few close decisions – even asking for the chair umpire to be removed. The Russian’s request was denied, eventually falling to Bemelmans 4-6, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, 3-6.

At the conclusion of the match, Medvedev expressed his displeasure by pulling out his wallet and throwing coins at the umpire’s chair.

“I was disappointed with the result of the match,” Medvedev said. “It was frustrating after a big win I had. All the match was not going well for me, so I was just very disappointed.

“In the heat of the moment, I did a bad thing. I apologize for this,” he also noted. “It was just that I was packing my things and I saw my wallet.”
