Fright Night: Cox Science Center juniors host inaugural Halloween-themed Masquerade Ball

There were bats in the belfry of The Colony Hotel as the young stuff gathered for a grown-up Halloween bash.

OK, so the Colony doesn't actually have a belfry. But if it did, it would have had bats.

The black-tie Masquerade Ball, a benefit for the Cox Science Center and Aquarium, took place Oct. 27 and was hosted by the junior committee, an engaged group with an interest in advancing the center's mission and visibility.

The evening began with cocktails — including the night's signature “Liquid Nitrogen Frosé”― a surprise appearance by the "Phantom of The Colony," and remarks from the center's president and CEO Kate Arrizza.

"This unique, Halloween-themed event was thoughtfully organized by our newly formed junior committee, who are committed to educating more who aren’t familiar with our mission,” Arizza said.

The night continued with ghoulish grub, devilish desserts, and dancing like a demon until it was time to go home and rifle through the kids' trick-or-treat haul.

Host committee members included Katie Benjamin, Lulu Carter, Emily Coscia, Alexandra Daniel, Allegra Garcia-Velez, Meredith Gregory, Judy Van der Grift, Heydyn Hernandez, Maddie Loeffler, Serena Mattson, Rosie Quick and Mimi Ring.

The night also served as a kickoff for the Science Center’s signature event, the Jan. 18 gala. "Oceans Alive! Exploring the Wonders of the Sea" will feature oceanographer Edith Widder.

More than 150 masked-and-costumed people attended the Masquerade Ball. Proceeds assist the Cox Science Center and Aquarium in its mission to “Open Every Mind to Science."
