“Friends” stars remember Matthew Perry in emotional tribute posts: 'He made all of us laugh'

“This was a chosen family that forever changed the course of who we were and what our path was going to be."

The Friends family is mourning one of their own.

Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, and David Schwimmer are sharing memories of their longtime costar Matthew Perry, the sixth member of the sitcom’s core cast, who died on Oct. 28 at age 54.

Initially, the five stars honored Perry with a joint statement, responding to the news of his unexpected death.

“We are all so utterly devastated by the loss of Matthew," the statement read. “We were more than just cast mates. We are a family. There is so much to say, but right now we're going to take a moment to grieve and process this unfathomable loss."

The Friends stars added that there would be more to share in the days ahead and delivered on the promise with a series of touching tribute posts, which they individually released this week.

LeBlanc, who charmed as Joey Tribianni, the goofy best friend to Chandler, remembered Perry with a carousel of photos shared on Instagram.

“It is with a heavy heart I say goodbye,” LeBlanc wrote. “The times we had together are honestly among the favorite times of my life. It was an honor to share the stage with you and to call you my friend. I will always smile when I think of you and I'll never forget you. Never."

In her own tribute, Cox recalled Perry’s signature sense of humor, sharing an outtake that he helped orchestrate. "In this scene, before we started rolling, he whispered a funny line for me to say. He often did things like that. He was funny and he was kind."

She wrote, "I am so grateful for every moment I had with you Matty and I miss you every day.”

Aniston also pointed out Perry’s humor, writing, “As he said himself, if he didn't hear the 'laugh' he thought he was going to die. His life literally depended on it. And boy did he succeed in doing just that. He made all of us laugh. And laugh hard.”

The actress included a photo of Perry making her laugh, which she revealed he once texted her with the caption, “Making you laugh just made my day. It made my day.”

Referencing the group overall, she added, “We were always the six of us. This was a chosen family that forever changed the course of who we were and what our path was going to be.”

Schwimmer paid tribute to his costar with a throwback photo, taken from the show's season 5 Thanksgiving episode, "The One With all the Thanksgivings."

"This photo is from one of my favorite moments with you,” he wrote referencing the flashback scene that sees the actors wearing goofy Miami Vice-style 80’s outfits. “Now it makes me smile and grieve at the same time.”

Kudrow also shared an old image with Perry, recounting their longtime friendship and his influence on the overall group.

“Thank you for making me laugh so hard at something you said that my muscles ached and tears poured down my face EVERY DAY,” she wrote. “Thank you for your open heart in a six-way relationship that required compromise. And a lot of 'talking.' Thank you for showing up at work when you weren’t well and then being completely brilliant. Thank you for the best 10 years a person gets to have.”

Perry was found dead at his home in the Pacific Palisades area of Los Angeles on a Saturday afternoon. Authorities have not yet determined a cause of death, though foul play is not suspected.

A five-time Emmy nominee, Perry was best known for his role as the sarcastic yet sweet Chandler Bing, one of the six pals at the center of Friends. The series became a top-rated show and bonafide cultural phenomenon during its 10-season run from 1994 to 2004 — and its success story doesn’t end there. The sitcom’s popularity has persisted, finding a new audience on streaming platforms. After years of inquiry, the cast came back together for the 2021 special Friends: The Reunion.

During the special, Perry got emotional while reflecting on the core cast’s enduring bond.

"The best way that I can describe it is after the show was over, at a party or any kind of social gathering, if one of us bumped into each other, that was it. That was the end of the night,” he said. “You just sat with the person all night long and that was it. You apologized to the people you were with, but they had to understand you had met somebody special to you and you were going to talk to that person for the rest of the night. And that’s the way it worked."

In addition to the main cast, Perry has been remembered by Friends co-creators Marta Kauffman and David Crane and supporting actors like Elliott Gould, Aisha Tyler, Maggie Wheeler, and Hank Azaria.
