When you’re in a loving relationship, you bring out the best in one another. Certain qualities come out even more, while more toxic ones (hopefully) get dropped over time. But with a love as explosive as John F. Kennedy Jr and Carolyn Bessette’s, many assumed they brought out the worst in one another. However, one of John’s buddies revealed Carolyn was exactly what he needed.

One of John’s college pals, Steven M. Gillon, who attended Brown University the same time as him and later worked for his magazine George, previously told InStyle all the details back in 2019.

“Carolyn, more than anyone who John had been with, would stand up to him, and confront him, and I think that John to an extent needed that,” the America’s Reluctant Prince: The Life of John F. Kennedy Jr. author said to the outlet, also discussing how that reportedly set her apart from his other girlfriends.

Along with that, he mentioned the infamous, videotaped confrontation between Bessette and John, saying “the cause of this infamous fight, and the many that followed, stemmed from Carolyn’s ongoing complaint that John let people walk all over him.”

It’s clear Bessette wasn’t afraid of confrontation and often stood up to anything she thought was wrong or needed to be fixed.

And this wasn’t the only pal to discuss Bessette’s confrontational patterns. Bobby DeMarzo, who Bessette met at her alma mater, Boston University, told the American Journal back in the day about Bessette’s fiery personality.

“We became very good friends, she was a great girl,” he said, adding he wasn’t surprised about the video of Bessette yelling at JFK Jr. “She’ll do what she wants to do, and whether you like or not, she’s gonna get it done.”
