EXCLUSIVE: Freestyle Releasing and Freestyle Digital Media have acquired U.S. theatrical, VOD and DVD rights to BAFTA-nominated Northern Soul. The directorial debut of photographer Elaine Constantine is a look back at the underground music movement in 1970s England. The story focuses on two friends inspired by American soul to dream of a more exciting life. Elliot James Langridge, Joshua Whitehouse, Lisa Stansfield and Steve Coogan star. A day-and-date release has been set in the U.S. for October 2.

Originally released in the UK (trailer above), the film also won Best Film at the 2015 NME Awards, was nominated for the 2015 London Film Critics’ Awards, and reached the Top 10 box office chart off of only 83 screens. Constantine, who also wrote the screenplay, was nominated for an Outstanding Debut by a British Director BAFTA.

Northern Soul is simply a great film,” says Mark Borde, President of Freestyle Releasing. “It perfectly depicts, in its setting, characters and mood, the underground movement of soul as it made its way into the psyches of an entire generation of kids.”

Producers are Debbie Gray with Stubborn Heart Productions in association with Genesius Pictures and Coogan’s Baby Cow. The deal was negotiated by Chris Charalambous, Head of Acquisitions for Freestyle Releasing and Freestyle Digital Media and by Robbie Little of The Little Film Company on behalf of the filmmakers.
