Freeform Buys

Freeform has bought drama Scare Club to develop as a potential special event series from Matt Hastings (Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments). Hastings will write the first two hours of the six-part series as part of Freeform’s Halloween block and is attached to direct and executive produce the pilot and series.

Scare Club tells the tale of four twentysomethings from disparate backgrounds who have a monthly book club that meets at the actual location where each book takes place. The friends’ personal stories intertwine with the hair-raising novels they are reading. Part road trip, part scare-provoking anthology, Scare Club puts a new twist on traditional narrative with a Halloween spin.

Hastings most recently served as executive producer and director of Freeform’s hit drama series Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments. He was key in rebooting the franchise for the cable net which is currently airing its third season. Previously, Hastings served as a co-executive producer and director on CW’s The Originals as well as co-executive producer/director on Syfy’s Alphas and Eureka.

Hastings is repped by ICM Partners and Gotham Group.
