What’s a Slurpee?

A Slurpee was named after the sound it makes when you drink it from a straw. The 7-Eleven staples are a carbonated drink that includes flavoring. While there are many varieties, the standards are cherry and cola.

Slurpees will do the trick, they’ll keep you cool and taste cool, but I’m not too big on carbonated summer drinks. This is at the bottom of the barrel, but it’s still a fine drink.

Pro tip: If you go to get your free Slurpee on Tuesday, buy a pretzel. It rewards them for giving you something, 7-Eleven has the best soft pretzels, and they go great with Slurpees!

Icees

Icees have a lot in common with their Slurpee brothers. These drinks, which are sold at stores including Wawa and were previously available at K-Mart, are pretty much the same thing as Slurpees. They are also most popular in cherry and cola flavors. This gets the same ranking as the Slurpee. I wouldn’t turn it down, but I’d rather something else.

What is Polish Water Ice?

This treat is the closest thing to ice cream in terms of texture, but it includes no dairy. You wouldn’t know it by feeling it. Polish water ice comes in just about every flavor, and they’re popular on the Wildwood boardwalk. If the options are this or a Slurpee, it’s a coin toss. If you’re looking to quench your thirst, go Slurpee. But Polish makes for a great treat.

Italian Water Ice

Now this is where things get good. Italian ice is described on Wikipedia as “a frozen or semi-frozen sweetened treat made with finely granulated ice and fruit flavor.” This, too, comes in a variety of flavors and are best eaten with a spoon. A Philly staple, these are easy to eat, cool you off and do everything you’d want a summer treat to do. But you can do better.

Slush

This is the Michael Jordan of summer treats because it’s a mix of all of the above, minus Polish Water Ice. It’s more of a drink with smaller ice pieces, so it’s consumed through a straw, but you can eat it with a spoon. It’s probably most similar to water ice in flavor, but it’s more of a drink like a Slurpee. Not only are these tremendous just to enjoy, if you ever come down with a sore throat, these are money. If you’re at a magic place that has everything, this would be the best bet. They’re available at various locations. Dairy Queen’s are classics, but if you’re near a participating Sonic during happy hour (2 to 4 p.m. daily), you can get them for half price.
