You can get free mulch from fallen Sacramento trees. Here’s where, when and how

Some of Sacramento’s more than 1,000 fallen trees were turned into mulch following the January storms and starting this weekend, you can stock up on as much of it as you want.

Sacramento is hosting two free mulch events from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 18 and Saturday, March 25 at William Land Regional Park. Just remember to bring your own tools including containers and a tarp, the city wrote on its website.

Mulch is any material — wood, leaves, straw or compost — spread over a surface to cover soil. When applied, it helps prevent evaporation, improve soil health and control weeds, the city wrote.

Large tree trunks will also be available for the taking, perfect for woodworkers and educators.

The giveaway is limited to city residents but addresses won’t be verified, said spokeswoman Gabby Miller with the city of Sacramento in an email to The Bee. The mulch is not for businesses.

Staff will help load mulch into vehicles.
