Free ice skating for Reading residents extended at Santander Arena

Dec. 27—Fourteen additional public ice-skating sessions for Reading residents have been scheduled for January at the Santander Arena.

The free program, called Winter Wonderland, is a project of the city in collaboration with the Reading Parking Authority, Reading Area Water Authority and Slapshot Charities, the charitable arm of the Reading Royals hockey team.

The free skating sessions, introduced in December at the arena, 700 Penn St., received overwhelming public response.

"All available slots were gone in record time," said a representative of Mayor Eddie Moran's office.

The popularity of the program prompted the mayor to announce its extension.

All slots are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

"We look forward to seeing more families enjoy fun activities in downtown Reading, like Winter Wonderland ice skating," the mayor said in a news release. "It is really special to see how many kids in our community experienced ice skating for the first time through this opportunity."

Moran said his administration plans to continue such collaborations to provide entertainment and recreation opportunities for city residents.

Free skating sessions will be held January 3, 5, 6, 10, 11, 12, 13, 16, 17, 19, 22, 28, and 31.

A limited number of free skate rentals will be available, or participants can bring their own skates.

Vouchers for free parking in the Convention Center Garage, 700 Court St., will be provided to participants.

The skating sessions are open to Reading residents only, and children must be accompanied by an adult.

Registration is required.
