Halloween is coming a little early to Monroe County Community College.

Members of the College/Community Symphony Band and the Agora Chorale and some special guests will present “Frightful Nights” at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 30 in the La-Z-Boy Center, Meyer Theater at MCCC, 1555 S. Raisinville Road. Admission is free. The public is welcome.

“The first concert of the MCCC season should be fun. Since it is so close to Halloween, it will be an all-out Halloween concert,” Mark Felder, band director, said. "The band will all be in costume, and mine is being kept secret.”

The band has 93 members this year.

All the band’s songs will be based on stories.

“We will have the wonderful Bobb Vergiels to tell those stories,” Felder said.

Another special guest, Ann Felder, will play a violin solo for "Danse Macabre" by Camille Saint-Saens. Nine members of MCCC's Inside Out Dance Ensemble, directed by Kellie Lajiness, also will perform.

The band's other songs are "Night on Bald Mountain" by Modest Moussorgsky and "The Witch and the Saint" by Steven Reineke.

“Our finale will be ‘In the Hall of the Mountain King' by Edvard Grieg,” Felder said. “It tells a story about trolls. If the audience imagines hard enough, trolls might appear. Nothing is impossible during the magic of Halloween.”

The 23-member Agora Chorale, directed by Jonathan Lunneberg, will sing Halloween-themed songs, including "The Fog" by Audrey Snyder; "Sure on this Shining Night" by Morten Lauridsen; "Lacrymosa" (from Requiem) by W.A. Mozart; "United in Purpose" by Rollo Dilworth; "Fly Away Home" by Pinkzebra; and "Circus Band" by Charles Ives.

The Agora Chorale will be accompanied by pianist Nancy Honnaker and Elizabeth Stewart, guest pianist.

The audience is welcome to wear costumes.

“Adults in costume and all children, regardless of costume, will get a treat after the concert,” Felder said.
