Fred Armisen Sets Spanish-Language HBO Pilot ‘Mexico City: Only Good Things Happen’

Fred Armisen is set to write, executive produce and star in a Spanish-language pilot for HBO, Variety has learned.

The half-hour comedy is titled “Mexico City: Only Good Things Happen.” It is described as being set in a dreamy version of present day Mexico City, following a group of friends obsessed with horror films and monster makeup.

Ana Fabrega and Julio Torres will write and co-executive produce alongside Armisen. “Saturday Night Live” creator Lorne Michaels will also executive produce via his Broadway Video production company, with Broadway Video’s Andrew Singer also executive producing. Alice Mathias will co-executive produce. Fernando Frias will direct the pilot. Broadway Video will produce in association with Más Mejor. Casting for the pilot is currently underway, primarily out of Mexico.

Armisen was a cast member on “Saturday Night Live” from 2002 to 2013. He currently stars in the IFC series “Portlandia,” which is going into its eighth and final season. The series has received widespread acclaim, and has won four Emmy Awards to date. Armisen also co-created and stars in IFC’s “Documentary Now” and serves as the bandleader for the NBC late-night series “Late Night with Seth Meyers.” His recent acting credits include the Netflix animated series “Big Mouth,” Hulu’s “Difficult People,” and Amazon’s “Comrade Detective.”

Armisen is repped by WME, Brillstein Entertainment Partners, and attorneys Jared Levine and Corinne Farley. Fabrega and Torres are repped by UTA.
