‘Freaks and Geeks’ Reunion? Martin Starr Says ‘Definitely No Way in Hell’ (Video)
Look at all the beloved shows of old making a comeback. “Arrested Development” is back. “Murphy Brown” is back. The “Parks and Recreation” cast is all game. And hey, “Roseanne” was exciting while it lasted. But what about a “Freaks and Geeks” reunion, that short-lived pinnacle of ’90s cult, teen comedy that launched the careers of so many? Surely that deserves one!
According to “Silicon Valley’s” Martin Starr, who played freshman dork Bill Haverchuk on the show, you shouldn’t get your hopes up.
“Definitely not. I’m sorry. I’m so sorry,” Starr said at TheWrap’s Emmys panel on Wednesday. “I’m going to break this to you the only way I know how. Definitely no way in hell.”

But why? It’s like you cut us off mid-funk! Starr says aside from all the scheduling issues, things just wouldn’t be the same.
“I don’t think you’d be happy! I’m going to try and talk you out of it. You wouldn’t enjoy it if it happened,” Starr said. “Just imagine, we’re a bunch of ugly old people now. We’re not the kids you look back and are like, ‘That’s just like me! I was awkward and weird in high school.’ Now we’re like s— pigs, grown a– s— pigs,” Starr said borrowing a word from fellow panelist Kristen Bell.
Starr explained that Judd Apatow and Paul Feig knew early on that “Freaks and Geeks” would be canceled and that the show had little support from the network. So they crafted it as a complete, finished product.

“They shot things the way they shot things to protect us. But ultimately, that was it! They really intended for it to be this 18-episode movie,” Starr said. “I’m so proud and fortunate to have been a part of it, but I don’t think that it would live up to any expectation if we were to find a way into those characters again.”
Apatow was a little more optimistic about the prospect of a “Freaks and Geeks” reunion than Starr, but that’s not to say he’s not interested.
“But you can dream about it,” Starr said to reassure a fan in the audience. “Please, write your fan fiction. I’ll read it! I’ll gladly do a reading. We’ll get a reading together for you no problem! Let’s do a fan fiction episode 19.”
