Frank Grillo to join “Peacemaker” season 2 as Rick Flag Sr. after voicing character on “Creature Commandos”

James Gunn personally announced on social media that Frank Grillo from "Creature Commandos" will join the live-action series.

James Gunn said that there will be consistency between the animated and live-action aspects of his new DC film universe, and he means it. The director announced Friday that Frank Grillo will play Rick Flag, Sr. in both the animated Creature Commandos and live-action Peacemaker season 2.

"Pleased to announce the great Frank Grillo will be reprising the role of Rick Flag, Sr — the role he’ll first play in animated form in Creature Commandos — throughout season 2 of Peacemaker," Gunn wrote on Threads. "Christopher Smith and Rick Sr have a little unfinished business to take care of…"

Peacemaker stars John Cena as the title character, jingoistic mercenary Christopher Smith. Cena first played the role in Gunn's 2021 superhero film The Suicide Squad, where he killed team leader Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman) to prevent him from exposing U.S. government secrets. Gunn seems to be hinting that Flag's father will be seeking some revenge in Peacemaker season 2.

Like Suicide Squad, Creature Commandos features a team of misfits working on secret missions for the U.S. government — except instead of supervillains, they're monsters. In addition to Grillo's Flag, Creature Commandos will star David Harbour as Frankenstein, Indira Varma as the Bride of Frankenstein, Maria Bakalova as Ilana Rostovic, Alan Tudyk as the radioactive Doctor Phosphorous, Zoe Chao as Nina Mazursky, and Gunn's brother Sean Gunn as both G.I. Robot and Weasel.

Grillo is now one of the few actors to participate in both the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Gunn's burgeoning DC films. The actor played Crossbones, a former SHIELD agent turned Hydra spy, in both Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War.
