Fox News personality confuses Gayle King for Robin Roberts in commentary about R. Kelly

Gayle King’s big sit-down with R. Kelly apparently came too soon after Robin Roberts’ now infamous interview with Empire’s Jussie Smollett —at least for one Fox News commentator.

During Wednesday’s edition of The Five, Jesse Watters was wrapping up some comments about the R&B singer and how R. Kelly is “taking no responsibility for himself” when he added, “hats off to Gayle King for totally redeeming herself after the Smollett fiasco.”

Commentator Dana Perino quickly corrected him. “That was not Gayle King. Robin Roberts did the Smollett interview.”

“I knew that,” replied Waters. Looking visibly embarrassed, he then said, “Sorry to Robin Roberts. I apologize.”

On Wednesday’s edition of CBS This Morning, King, who is African-American, interviewed the R&B singer about his sexual abuse allegations. On Feb. 14, Roberts, who is also African-American, interviewed Smollett for ABC’s Good Morning America to talk about how he was supposedly attacked on the streets of Chicago. Smollett has since been arrested on charges that he filed a false police report. (He denies the charges.)

Watters later flashed another mea culpa.

CBS will air King’s entire interview with the R&B singer as part of a one-hour primetime special on March 8 at 8 p.m. ET.
