More than a year after having announced plans to open three Athens area locations, Whataburger has confirmed that a fourth restaurant is now on the way while the initial trio remain under construction. A representative for the fast food chain told the Banner-Herald that a Whataburger is coming to 700 US-29, the retail development that houses Kroger Marketplace (also known as "Space Kroger").

The initial statement from Whataburger came in March 2022, when locations were announced for 3321 Lexington Rd. and 3201 Atlanta Hwy. in Athens and at 100 Pottery Rd. in Commerce. A year later, the company held a groundbreaking ceremony at the Atlanta Highway site, and the restaurants were in varying stages of completion as of August 2023 with no confirmed opening dates.

Georgians looking to sample the breakfast or sandwich options can visit one of the six operating Whataburger locations in Buford, Cumming, Kennesaw, Newnan, Thomasville or Woodstock. The Texas-based franchise opened its first location in 1950 and runs 948 stores in the United States.
