Scott Clifton has three Daytime Emmys on his shelf for his portrayal of Liam Spencer on Bold and the Beautiful. Now, in light of his most recent nomination, he’s looking at winning a fourth “Golden Girl” when the awards are handed out in June.

Accolade No. 4 on the Horizon

“After I won the Lead Actor Daytime Emmy in 2017, I thought, now it’s time to disappear for a little while,” Clifton candidly shares. (The actor had previously won the statuettes for Younger Leading Man and Supporting Actor.) “It’s a big ask to ask an Emmy voter to sit there and watch you work. I don’t want people to get sick of me.”

This year, however, Clifton was not only persuaded successfully to submit his name, but he also scored a nomination. The actor was encouraged to go with a pair of consecutive episodes in which Liam confronted his wife Hope (Annika Noelle) after she returned home from Rome where he saw her kiss Thomas (Matthew Atkinson). The scenes were fraught with tension as the very thing that Liam feared would happen in Italy between Hope and her co-worker did indeed happen.

Soap Hub wrote up Clifton’s performances from this time for our Performer of the Week for B&B feature. You can read that commentary here.

“This nomination meant a lot to me in ways that I haven’t said before,” the actor tells Soap Hub.

Clifton’s not sure what Noelle submitted but he wouldn’t be surprised if she included on her entry the same scenes he did. “You could have taken my reel and slapped her name on it, and she would have gotten nominated off that,” he offers. “I’m sure she did. I’m glad she got nominated for this story. I’m so proud to work with her and collaborate with her. We put a lot of thought into those scenes.”

Of course, Scott Clifton is familiar with fellow nominees and co-stars John McCook (Eric) and Thorsten Kaye (Ridge), last year’s winner, as well as Eric Braeden, who tapes across the hall from B&B as Victor on Young and the Restless. “I do know Eric [Martsolf, Brady, Days of our Lives, who is nominated],” Clifton says. “He’s the sweetest, nicest guy. I couldn’t be happier for him. Eric Braeden is an icon.

“For the most part, the actual Daytime Emmy ceremony for me, and people may not see this but I’m really, really introverted,” the actor says. “The part that puts me at ease is getting to see people I love that I haven’t gotten to see in sometime. That makes it all worth it. You look forward to it. ‘I wonder if so-and-so is going to be there?’ Then, when it’s over, you get to relax at the afterparty. We can all just relax. That creates a nice, celebratory community energy for everyone.”

The 51st Annual Daytime Emmy Awards will air on Friday, June 7 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on CBS and on Paramount+.
