Four things to do in Iowa City this weekend from new exhibits to exclusive events

A snowstorm took over Iowa City last week with over a foot of snow and subzero temperatures. The storm caused event cancellations and a suspension of bus services, which might have incited some feelings of cabin fever.

While it will still be cold in Iowa City, there are plenty of ways to get out of the house this weekend.

Here are four things to check out in Iowa City, Jan. 19-21:

Making the Book, Past and Present at the Main Library exhibit

A new semester at the University of Iowa welcomes a new main Library exhibit.

“Making the Book, Past and Present” explores the intersections of history, art, and practicality throughout time. The exhibition features a selection of rare historic books to modern editions ranging from medieval manuscripts to unique pop-up books. Curated by Eric Ensley and Emily Martin, “Making the Book, Past and Present” utilizes U of I’s Special Collections and Archives materials to demonstrate the strong connection between books and makers past and present. The exhibit is open from Jan. 16 to June 28 and admission is always free.

Beat the winter blues by laughing with Paula Poundstone on Jan.20. Poundstone is best known for her observational comedy and various podcasts like Nobody Listens to Paula Poundstone and being a regular guest on NPR’s comedy news quiz, Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me! Poundstone is one of the most decorated female comedians in the past 40 years, and her tour is making a stop at The Englert, with tickets going for $39.50, not including ticketing fees.

Hancher Auditorium’s Broadway series returns, featuring four of Broadway’s biggest hits from January to June. The first show brings “To Kill a Mockingbird” to the stage. Academy Award-winner Aaron Sorkin’s adaptation of Harper Lee’s Pulitzer Prize-winning and famed banned book has four showtimes, with five shows from Jan. 19 to Jan. 21. Tickets start at $79.

The arctic blast and inches of snow might have readers missing summer activities, like the Iowa City Farmers Market. Luckily, the Johnson County Market indoor Famers Market is in full swing.

From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Jan. 21, enjoy the typical charm of a farmers’ market but in a warm and cozy environment. The market will offer a variety of vendors selling produce, meats, specialty foods, handcrafted, homemade, and small business wares.

The Johnson County Agricultural Association hosts the market at the Johnson County fairgrounds in building C.
