Found’s Shanola Hampton Assures ‘Secrets Will Be Revealed’ in Season 1 — Plus, What’s Up With Gabi and Lacey?

Found’s Gabi Mosely (played by Shanola Hampton) is a compelling contradiction.

In the NBC drama, she’s a savior for those who’ve slipped through the cracks. She also holds her former kidnapper Sir (Mark-Paul Gosselar) captive in her basement.

“Gabi Mosley is the definition of beautifully flawed,” Hampton tells TVLine. “She used what happened to her as a child to empower her and to make sure that that would not happen to anyone else. But at the same time, she hasn’t healed from what happened to her, and it did a lot of damage to her.”

Remnants of her traumatic past sprang up in Tuesday’s episode, titled “Missing While Indigenous,” as the embattled heroine recalled a painful memory of Sir locking her up in a windowless room after attempting to escape. Although shaken up by the disturbing flashback, Gabi used it to figure out where her missing victim was being held and saved the young woman’s life. But Gabi’s triumph was soon cut short by Trent revealing that there’d been a “credible sighting” of Sir near her house.

That surprising twist speaks the core issue in Gabi’s life, which is Sir. Any progress she makes will ultimately be derailed by the fact that she keeps him chained up in her basement. He is a hindrance to Gabi’s healing, and she knows it.

“I think you start to see her conflict in her mind and how she’s crumbling as the season is unfolding,” Hampton shares. “You can see her really starting to lose it because she knows she’s not healing. She’s keeping this big secret.”

The Found actress notes that Gabi understands what she’s doing with Sir is wrong but she “still has this passion to make sure that no one else is in the situation that she finds herself currently in. To save them before they have all this extra trauma.”

However, those efforts to protect everyone around her may end up costing her one of her most important relationships. Lacey (Gabrielle Elise Walsh), who Sir also kidnapped to keep Gabi company, confronted Gabi in Episode 6 about the lies she picked up on. As Lacey grows more suspicious that Gabi is hiding something, “you’ll see Gabi starting to push her away,” Hampton says. Their push-and-pull throughout the season will then lead to a “break.”

“Gabi has been just going through it this season and it has to come to a head,” the actress adds.

As for the season’s big questions, such as how Gabi even captured Sir, Hampton assures that answers are coming. “Absolutely,” she teases. “Questions will be answered, secrets will be revealed. It’s epic! I promise you that [showrunner Nkechi Okoro Carroll] has given you everything you want in the first season of a show, and you will be left at the end still wanting more.”
