Derrick Ward, former running back for the New York Giants, was arrested in Los Angeles on Monday (Dec. 18). The 43-year-old was taken into custody due to alleged robbery.

Police reported that Ward was arrested in the North Hollywood area. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department inmate search website confirmed that he was being held on $250,000 bail. The police did not initially reveal details of why he was arrested, nor was there any comment from Ward’s side, as it was unclear whether he even had legal representation.

The police later told NBC News that the Super Bowl winner had allegedly robbed five businesses, including gas stations. Notably, they reported that the Ottawa University graduate did not use a firearm during the alleged robberies.

Ward was drafted to the New York Jets in 2004, but soon got cut before playing a regular season game. He went on to join the New York Giants, playing for them from 2004 to 2008 while splitting running back duties with Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw. He was part of the roster that won Super Bowl XLII against the undefeated New England Patriots, but did not play due to suffering a broken leg.

From there, he signed a four-year deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but was cut just after one year. He played his final two seasons for the Houston Texans before retiring from the NFL in 2012.

Ward finished his NFL career with 2,628 rushing yards on 551 attempts and 12 touchdowns. His best single-season performance came in 2008, where he recorded 1,028 rushing yards on 182 carries and scored two touchdowns.
