Former Lions Player Cameron Sutton Turns Himself in Weeks After Domestic Violence Warrant

Cameron Sutton has surrendered to authorities weeks after being issued a domestic violence arrest warrant.

The former Detroit Lions and Pittsburgh Steelers player, 29, turned himself into the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office in Tampa, Florida, on Sunday night. This comes after "weeks of evading law enforcement" over a domestic battery by strangulation charge, the police said.

The office announced that Sutton was in custody on Monday by sharing footage of the player being detained by police on X (formerly known as Twitter).

"After weeks of evading law enforcement, this man has finally made the right choice to turn himself in," Sheriff Chad Chronister said in a statement.

The sheriff added, "Domestic violence has no place in our community, and no one is above the law here in Hillsborough County. My thoughts are with this woman as she continues to heal from this man’s gruesome actions.”

According to ESPN, Sutton was wanted on a charge of domestic battery by strangulation after police responded to a Lutz, Florida, residence on March 7 where he allegedly assaulted a woman and fled.

The sheriff's office told the outlet that the woman had several injuries when officers arrived.

“He’s been ducking us,” a spokesperson for the sheriff's office told MLive after the warrant was issued. “Our deputies have exhausted all leads. He’s got vehicles and a home nearby and he hasn’t been there. He’s turned off his phone.”

In a statement, the Detroit Lions organization previously noted that it "became aware of the ongoing legal situation involving Cam Sutton" on March 20. The team added that they "will continue to monitor the situation and will not have further comment at this time."

Detroit then released Sutton from the team on March 21. As the Associated Press noted, he was in the midst of a $33 million, three-year deal with the franchise. He was previously signed to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

In the days that followed, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said that Sutton's attorney contacted them on March 25 "to inform us that he was going to Tampa to turn himself into authorities."

Per the police, "it wasn’t until today, March 31, 2024, at 8:24 p.m. that Sutton arrived to the Orient Road Jail to turn himself in."

According to the AP and ESPN, domestic battery by strangulation is a third-degree felony and is punishable by up to five years in prison.
