Former Fox News Anchor Gretchen Carlson Responds to Harvey Weinstein Scandal
Gretchen Carlson — the former Fox News anchor who famously and successfully filed a sexual harassment lawsuit against the late Roger Ailes — is the latest celebrity to respond to Thursday’s bombshell report about Harvey Weinstein that accuses the Hollywood movie mogul of decades of sexual harassment.
“When will we finally say enough?” Carlson tweeted on Thursday evening, thanking “all the brave women who spoke up.”
In a lengthy post, Carlson never mentioned Weinstein by name, but referred to him as a “powerful man,” just hours after the New York Times published a report detailing allegations of Weinstein sexually harassing numerous women throughout his career.
“Once again we have the revelation that for 30 years a powerful man has harassed women and the companies they run have enabled it, covered it up, and shut up the victims,” Carlson wrote. “This happens in all industries and it must stop.”
“Most disturbing is the fact that this company required employees to agree to secrecy before they were even hired,” Carlson’s post continued. “Women who are brave enough to complain about harassment are forced to sign confidentiality agreements. So, the harassers are free to harass again, sometimes for decades, and the women are forever silenced. When will this dynamic end? Women and the men who support them need to make changes now!”
Carlson filed a lawsuit against Ailes in mid-2016, accusing her boss of propositioning her for sex. Following the allegations, Carlson reportedly received a $20 million settlement and a public apology from Fox News. Her suit ultimately set off a domino effect of accusations and resulted in the Fox News chief resigning from the company. Ailes died in May 2017.
Since departing Fox News, Carlson has made it her mission to fight against sexual harassment in the workplace. Her latest book, “Be Fierce: Stop Harassment and Take Back Your Power,” hits shelves this week.
