“No matter how much trauma I’ve gone through — feeling like something was irretrievably lost — it’s been an extraordinary experience to realize I’m not broken,” Oxenberg told PEOPLE. “I’ve realized I’m not defective. I’m intact. I’m whole.”

The Sleeping Beauty star made international headlines when she fought to free her daughter India from the sinister NXIVM cult.

It took Oxenberg seven years to reunite with India, and she documented the experience in her 2018 book Captive. The ordeal was also covered in the 2020 Starz docuseries Seduced.

While speaking to PEOPLE in August 2018, Oxenberg recalled the heartbreak she felt to learn that her daughter had been branded as a member of the NXIVM cult.

“I was horrified,” Oxenberg told PEOPLE. “It was horror and disbelief. I could never believe anything like that could have happened to my daughter. It seems so aberrant and it was so twisted. And how had it gone from a group about ‘self help’ to suddenly being about branding women?”

When NXIVM founder Keith Raniere was convicted in federal court the following August for sex trafficking charges, it was a major weight lifted from Oxenberg’s shoulders.

I couldn’t stop sobbing. It was like all of this pent up emotion and I was trying to be quiet and not be disruptive,” she told PEOPLE in 2018.
