Former Dodger Adrian Gonzalez Scores Big on Hancock Park Sale

Former Dodger first baseman Adrian Gonzalez isn’t feeling the coronavirus-induced real estate blues that many of his peers are currently experiencing. The retired slugger and his wife, fashion designer Betsy Gonzalez, have sold their elegant Hancock Park mansion in an off-market deal for just north of $8.6 million, a full $3.5 million more than than they paid for the property almost exactly seven years ago, back in May 2013. Records reveal the all-cash buyers are a married couple from Mainland China.
Though it retains many of its original architectural details, the house has been completely remodeled over the last few years, with upgraded interiors, a slew of designer finishes and all the amenities buyers of an $8.6 million mansion have come to expect. Located on one of Hancock Park’s most prestigious streets, on a particularly prime corner lot, the historic property was originally developed during the Prohibition era and consists of a red tile-roofed Mediterranean manse with nearly 8,000 square feet of living space, a separate guesthouse and backyard swimming pool.

A stone walkway leads from the street to an arched, vaguely ecclesiastical front door. Inside, the interior decor veers toward a warmly neutral color scheme; rich chocolate brown hardwood floors flow throughout most of the house, while the living room offers a fireplace and sets of French doors leading to various parts of the gardens.
Other luxe features include a seriously swank kitchen with a glass-fronted refrigerator, a black-and-white checkerboard marble floor and roomy butler’s pantry. There’s also a proper wine cellar with storage for hundreds — if not thousands — of bottles, and an upstairs master suite with sitting area and spa-style bath.
The lot also contains an irregularly-shaped pool with adjacent spa and grotto with waterfall, plus a giant Baja deck for watery sunbathing. The detached guesthouse, meanwhile, is currently outfitted as a notably swank games area with a pool table and trophy cabinets with Vegas-like backlighting.
While they’ve bid adieu to this particular “starter” home, the Gonzalez family continues to reside in Hancock Park. Two years ago, they paid $10.5 million for an notably larger but similar-looking historic estate that’s just a couple blocks away. And they continue to maintain a $10 million getaway mansion down in gorgeous La Jolla, Calif., in the San Diego area, that they’ve now owned for a full decade.
