Former ‘Deadliest Catch’ Deckhand Jerod Sechrist Charged With Heroin Possession in Florida

A former deckhand who appeared on deep-sea crabbing series “Deadliest Catch” in 2016 has been arrested and charged with heroin possession and violating probation due to a past traffic offense.

Jerod Sechrist, 33, was taken into custody by Tampa Police on Oct. 5 in Hillsborough County, Florida in reference to his active warrant relating to a past traffic violation, according to the criminal report affidavit.

Police searched Sechrist at the time of his arrest and found him to be in possession of heroin and drug paraphernalia, for which he was also charged.

Sechrist appeared in two episodes of Discovery’s “Deadliest Catch” as a deckhand in 2016. Discovery declined to comment Tuesday.

This is not the first time police have had run-ins with the cast of the Discovery series, which has been fraught with arrests as well as tragedies in the past few years.

Most recently, in July of 2018, one of the show’s stars, Edgar Hansen, avoided jail time after pleading guilty to sexually assaulting a teenage girl, The Seattle Times reported. In 2017, Hansen’s co-star, captain Sig Hansen, was arrested for assault after allegedly kicking an Uber driver’s car and spitting at the driver, according to KOMO News.

In 2016, one of the reality show’s stars, Jake Harris, was found beaten and robbed on the side of a highway in Washington state. Two suspects were later arrested.

And in May of 2018, Blake Painter, who appeared on the series in 2006 and 2007, was found dead in his Astoria, Oregon, home. He was 38. The former skipper of the F/V Maverick was discovered by a friend who became worried after not seeing him for several days, Clatsop County Sheriff Tom Bergin told USA Today.
