Former Cup Series owner Harry Scott Jr. dies
Former Cup Series owner Harry Scott Jr. died Wednesday. He was 51.
His family confirmed Scott’s passing in a statement on Thursday. The former co-owner of Turner Scott Motorsports fielded a Cup Series team from 2013-2016.
Justin Allgaier served as the team’s primary driver when HScott Motorsports expanded to run a full season in 2014. HScott expanded to two teams in 2015 and added Michael Annett, who drove for the team for two seasons.
Clint Bowyer replaced Allgaier at the team in 2016 in what was Bowyer’s “gap year” between the shutdown of Michael Waltrip Racing and his takeover of the No. 14 car at Stewart-Haas Racing following Tony Stewart’s retirement.
Bowyer struggled mightily, scoring just three top-10 finishes and finishing 27th in the points standings. After Bowyer’s departure to SHR and Annett’s move to JR Motorsports in the Xfinity Series, HScott Motorsports shut down before the 2017 season.
Turner-Scott Motorsports, which Scott co-owned with Steve Turner, made its NASCAR debut in the Camping World Truck Series in 2009 with Turner as the primary owner after he took over the assets of Braun Racing.
Scott bought into the team in 2013 and it was renamed Turner-Scott Motorsports. In its five-year-plus history in NASCAR, TSM won 19 races in the Xfinity and Truck Series and James Buescher won the 2012 Truck Series title driving for Turner.
Turner died in May of 2016.
