Former Clemson QB Chase Brice transfers to Duke
Chase Brice isn’t leaving the ACC.
The former Clemson backup said Sunday afternoon that he was transferring to Duke. A graduate transfer, Brice is immediately eligible to play at Duke in 2020 and has two years of eligibility remaining. Duke confirmed the addition on Monday and said Brice planned to enroll in July once he graduates from Clemson.

Brice was Trevor Lawrence’s primary backup in each of the past two seasons for the Tigers. He saw playing time in 23 games in 2018 and 2019 and was 82-of-136 passing for 1,023 yards and nine touchdowns and four interceptions in that span. He was pressed into action in September of 2018 when Lawrence was injured in Clemson’s win over Syracuse and was seven-of-13 for 83 yards and a pick in that game. He threw 16 passes in the Tigers’ blowout win over Boston College in 2019, completing eight for 97 yards and a TD.
Duke’s David Cutcliffe coached Mannings, Daniel Jones
Brice should be the favorite to start for Duke in 2020 as Quentin Harris was a senior in 2019.
Harris spent the majority of his career backing up Daniel Jones for the Blue Devils before getting his shot to be the full-time starter this past season. Jones was the No. 6 pick in the 2019 NFL draft by the New York Giants despite good college stats that were less than eye-popping.
Duke coach David Cutcliffe had a lot to do with that high draft selection. Cutcliffe, who was the offensive coordinator at Tennessee while Peyton Manning was with the Volunteers and the head coach at Ole Miss when Eli Manning played for the Rebels, vouched for Jones’ talent and projectability after Jones left Duke following the 2018 season.
If Brice prospers in his two years at Duke under Cutcliffe’s tutelage, he’s got a great shot at being drafted.
He’ll also avoid Clemson over the next two seasons unless the Blue Devils make the ACC Championship Game in either 2020 or 2021. Duke is in the ACC Coastal Division and doesn’t play Clemson again until 2023.
Remaining grad transfer QBs
Brice joins Jamie Newman (Wake Forest to Georgia), D’Eriq King (Houston to Miami), Jake Bentley (South Carolina to Utah) and Feleipe Franks (Florida to Arkansas) as graduate transfer QBs to sign with Power Five schools.
That leaves Stanford’s K.J. Costello and Boston College’s Anthony Brown as the top two Power Five grad transfer QBs remaining. Costello and Brown will likely make their decisions in the coming weeks to sign with a school ahead of spring practices.
